The Ultimate Guide for Shrink Sleeve Machines
Compared with traditional labeling, shrink sleeve machine can bring 360° dead-angle-free coverage design, so that your products can be displayed in all directions.
If you are considering the use of shrink sleeve labeling packaging, or want to gain insight into the principles of shrink sleeve labeling machine selection, this guide is definitely worth bookmarking.
What Is a Shrink Sleeve Machine?

A shrink sleeve machine is a type of labeling equipment that applies heat-shrinkable plastic sleeves to bottles, jars, cans, or other containers. The sleeves fit tightly around the product after passing through a heat tunnel, creating a 360° wrap that doubles as a label and a tamper-evident seal.
How does the Shrink Sleeve Machine Work?

In fact, the whole process is very simple to say, have seen it once you understand.
At the beginning is a roll of shrink film that has been printed, brand patterns, bar codes, nutritional content should have. After the film rolled into the machine, it will be cut into a section of independent sets of labels.
But there is a detail that is often overlooked: these films are flat, the machine will first heat-seal the edges, so that they become a cylindrical “set”.
Then comes the labeling part. The machine applies the sleeve accurately to the container – whether it’s a bottle, a jar or a glass jar – with precision and cleanliness, no glue, no dirty hands.
Finally, it’s all about heat setting. The product goes through a hot air or steam tunnel, and the entire sleeve label fits and tightens, completely adhering to the bottle, with curved lines and textures.
That’s it, it’s fast, it’s clean, and it comes out looking packaged and upscale.
Why are More and More Brands Using Shrink Sleeve Machines?

- 360° Label Coverage
The label wraps all the way around your bottle — no breaks, no seams. It’s like giving your product a full outfit instead of just a sticker. So whether it’s on the shelf or in someone’s hand, your branding is totally visible.
- Fits Any Shape
Bottles aren’t always round or square, right? Shrink sleeves hug them all — oval, rectangular, even weird shapes. And it doesn’t matter if it’s glass, plastic, or metal. This means you don’t have to change your bottle just to make the label fit.
- Visual Impact
You can print just about anything — shiny metallic, matte, transparent windows — all in super high quality. No edges or wrinkles, just a smooth, premium finish that makes your product pop and feel nice in hand.
- Durability & Protection
These sleeves don’t just look good, they protect your product too. They’re like a flexible shield against scratches, moisture, and bumps. So your products arrive looking great, with less damage and less waste.
- Machine Versatility & Efficiency
Whether you’re doing small batches or big runs, the machines adjust quickly to different bottle sizes and shapes. Changeovers are simple and the shrinking process is smooth — fewer mistakes, less downtime.
- Eco-Friendly Material Options
Sustainability is key now. Good news is, these machines work with films like PETG and PLA that shrink well but can also be recycled or composted. So you get cool packaging without hurting the planet.
How Shrink Sleeves Are Shrunk

Traditional Shrinking Methods
- Steam Shrinking
Steam shrink is one of the most commonly used and reliable shrink sleeve labeling methods. It uses high-temperature steam to uniformly heat the shrink film, causing the film to shrink tightly around the container, creating a smooth, wrinkle-free surface that perfectly fits complex bottle shapes and contours.
Due to the uniformity and efficiency of steam heat transfer, this method is suitable for a wide range of packaging scenarios, from beverage bottles to cosmetic containers. The finished product has a professional appearance that greatly enhances the product’s shelf appeal.
At the same time, steam shrinking is more energy efficient and environmentally friendly than direct flame or hot air, which utilizes water vapor for heating. Our equipment precisely adjusts steam flow and temperature to ensure consistent shrinkage, reduce waste, and maintain productivity.
- Hot Air Shrinking
Hot air shrinkage involves blowing shrink film directly through hot air to tightly wrap the container. This method is popular due to the simple structure of the equipment, high flexibility and lower cost. The hot air shrink tunnel or fan distributes the hot air evenly, ensuring that the film shrinks smoothly without wrinkles or damage.
This method is suitable for standard bottle sizes and is especially suited to lines where steam shrinkage is not readily available. Although hot air shrinkage usually requires slightly higher temperatures and longer times, it offers good temperature control and suitability.
Our hot air shrink systems optimize airflow and temperature management to ensure consistent shrink quality and efficient energy use. Whether you’re packaging beverages, household goods or pharmaceuticals, hot air shrink delivers reliable and aesthetically pleasing packaging results.
- Infrared Shrinking
Infrared shrinking uses infrared lamps to heat the shrink film directly. Unlike steam or hot air, which rely on blowing or surrounding heat, infrared targets the film’s surface with radiant energy. That means the film heats up quickly and starts shrinking almost instantly.
It’s especially handy for spot heating or when you want to shrink just a small area—like tamper-evident bands around caps. Plus, because it’s more focused, it can save energy and reduce the risk of overheating the whole container.
That said, it requires precise control; too much heat or uneven exposure can cause wrinkles or damage. When dialed in right, infrared shrinking delivers fast, clean results and works great alongside other shrinking methods.
- Hot Plate Shrinking
Hot plate shrinkage is not quite the same as steam or hot air. Instead of blowing hot air, it uses a heated flat plate to directly press against the shrink film, transferring the heat to make the film material shrink at the specified location.
This method is particularly suitable for small labels or tamper-evident rings, and works well when precise control is required. It is fast and efficient, but is generally used for simple shapes or smaller areas, and improper contact can easily leave marks or uneven shrinkage.
Hot plate shrink is not particularly common and is more of a solution for specific scenarios, but when appropriate it can save you a lot of time and make the finished product neater.
Newest Shrink Technology
- Low-temp Steam or IR Shrink Technology
When it comes to shrinking delicate or heat-sensitive products, high temperatures aren’t always the best friend. That’s where low-temperature steam or infrared shrinking steps in. By carefully dialing down the heat, these methods gently shrink the film without risking damage to the container or label.
Low-temp steam uses cooler steam vapor to softly coax the film into place, while low-temp infrared lamps focus heat precisely where it’s needed. Both options are perfect for fragile bottles or packaging materials that might warp or melt under intense heat.
The result? Smooth, wrinkle-free sleeves that look great without stressing your product or slowing down your line. Plus, using lower temps means less energy consumption, making your packaging process more eco-friendly.
- 3D Adaptive Shrink Tunnel
Not every bottle is straight up and down – that’s why the 3D Adaptive Shrink Tunnel exists. Instead of heating all products equally, it adjusts the temperature, air direction and airflow in real time to the specific shape of the bottle.
Whether it’s a curved bottle, an angular package, or an irregularly shaped container, this system will “heat the bottle according to the bottle”, so that the sleeve label fits just right, without wrinkles or looseness, and the bottom and neck of the bottle can be closed cleanly.
This “smart” tunnel makes the production line more flexible and the shrinkage effect more stable. You don’t need to overheat the whole film for the difficult parts, the packaging effect is good and the energy consumption can be reduced.
- Shrink-on-the-Fly Technology
In traditional shrink systems, the product usually has to “stop” or at least slow down in order for the sleeve to tighten smoothly. But with Shrink-on-the-Fly technology, these pauses are eliminated.
The key behind this is precise control. The heating zone adjusts in real time to the position and speed of the bottles, ensuring that the shrinkage is just right and doesn’t run off. Even bottles with complex shapes are cleanly collected at full speed.
For high-speed production lines, this is a godsend for efficiency. There is no need for slow motion, no need to worry about traffic jams, the shrinkage effect is stable, and the rhythm can also be raised.
- AI Heat Mapping & Vision Control
The AI heat mapping and vision control system doesn’t heat blindly, it “sees and does”.
Through cameras and sensors, the system monitors the status of each bottle in the tunnel in real time, and the AI will compare the captured image with the ideal shrinkage effect, and then automatically adjust the heating strategy – where to heat up more, where to cool down, and even stop immediately when it encounters an abnormality.
As a result, there are fewer unqualified labels, the film is applied more tightly, and the waste has dropped a lot. Especially suitable for multi-specification, small batch or bottle type slightly different orders, without frequent manual adjustment of equipment, the system itself can “learn”.
In short, this set of technology is: smarter, more stable, accurate, but also worry.
What Makes Up a Shrink Sleeve Machine

Upstream Film Processing
- Printing Presses
The visual impact of shrink sleeve machine starts from here, the printing machine utilizes various special processes (such as metallic luster, matte, transparent window) to accurately print your product pattern, text, barcode and other information on the sleeve film, with precise control of overlay positioning, tensile control, and stability of the film material over long distances.
Whether you choose PVC, PETG, or PLA film material, a reliable printing machine ensures that your brand images and information are presented clearly and vibrantly as you envisioned, meeting market regulatory needs and allowing customers to see your product at a glance for increased recognition.
- Slitters
The master roll after printing is usually wide and cannot be used directly for sleeve labeling, it needs a slitter to cut each roll of film material precisely to match the width of the bottle before it can enter the subsequent process. A quality slitter ensures that the edges of the film are flat and consistent in size, and will not be deformed and wrinkled, allowing the entire system to run more smoothly.
Even if different bottle types are frequently switched and SKUs are adjusted back and forth, it can quickly cut out the matching width, reduce the waste of film and improve the overall efficiency.
- Laminators
Some shrink film is not a single layer structure, but through the lamination process, two or more layers of film laminated together, to enhance the strength of the film, barrier or surface texture, this time the laminator can come in handy.
It can combine the printed film with a transparent protective film or rigid base mold, so that the shrink label is more firm, bright, and water and oxygen resistance, packaging for a long time look as good as new.
- Seaming Machines
Shrink wrap is actually flat when it first comes out and doesn’t fit directly over the bottle, it has to be folded over on both sides for an aligned heat seal.
Doesn’t that sound simple? But in practice there are a lot of problems to be solved. For example, the seal can not be too loose, or set up easy to crack and fall down, but also can not be too tight, so that the contraction will not be uniform. Some systems use heat sealing, some use ultrasonic welding, but no matter which way, the tube maker can accurately grasp the accuracy of the sealing, so that the seams of the shrink film are strong and flat, and no trace can be seen.
A good side seam, although the user can not see it, but directly affects the final labeling beauty or not.
Sleeve Application & Shrinking System

- Shrink Sleeve Applicators
This system places the sleeve over each container. It handles bottles, jars, or cans—round, square, or irregular. It holds the sleeve steady and drops it into position. No twisting, no slippage. The motion must match the speed of the line. If the sleeve tilts or wrinkles, it hurts the final look. A good applicator stays accurate, even during product changeovers. Tool-free adjustment is key for fast swaps and consistent results.
- Steam Shrink Tunnels
Steam wraps the sleeve gently and evenly. Heat comes from all directions, which helps the film shrink without burning or folding. This works well for curved or embossed containers. The result is smooth and tight. It suits high-end bottles where appearance matters. Steam is also easier on printed graphics and soft materials. With adjustable nozzles and zone controls, it adapts to different SKUs without stopping the line.
- Hot Air Shrink Tunnels
Hot air shrink tunnels use heated air, not steam, to blow the sleeve label hot and Hot air replaces steam where moisture is a concern. It fits paper containers, laminated sleeves, or moisture-sensitive products. These tunnels heat fast and are simple to clean. Air nozzles target specific bottle areas, like shoulders or bottoms. You don’t need a drainage system, and there’s less routine maintenance. If you need dry, controlled heat, this is the better option.
- Heat-sensitive film
Shrink film needs no glue. Heat causes it to contract and hold shape. But each material—PVC, PETG, OPS, PLA—reacts differently. Some shrink faster, some need more balance. Wrong heat causes blisters or wrinkles. The right film and setup give you smooth, clear coverage that stays tight after cooling.
- Constant-temperature side sealing device
Inconsistent heat leaves crooked seams or burnt edges. This device keeps temperature steady, which matters for films like PVC or PLA. A good seal is tight, flat, and almost invisible. If the seal looks rough, the whole package looks cheap. A stable sealing system keeps the wrap clean and makes it feel like part of the container.
Sensing, Control & Automation
- Handwheel for adjustment
When switching bottle types, the workload can really explode if you still have to go through the process of adjusting the program, screwing in the screws, and opening the electrical cabinet.
The handwheel takes that workload off your shoulders. No tools, no stopping the line, just screw it, you can quickly adjust the height of the film drop, the position of the cutter, etc., just like you usually lift the chair as simple.
This device looks ordinary, but in a SKU frequently switching production line, it is a proper “rhythm stabilizer”. Don’t look down on this knob, it can save you a lot of trouble.
- Electric eye detection and timer
Sometimes the production line runs quite smoothly, and suddenly a bottle is advanced into position, or the film material is not yet finished, pop – the set is crooked, or even jammed film, broken tape.
The electric eye and timer are to help you monitor these unexpected situations, it is the eye and metronome of the shrink sleeve labeling machine, accurately identifying the position of each container, detecting the movement of the film sheet, and not allowing the machine to continue to start the next step if it is not in place.
With this device, it allows your entire package to run at a set pace, so that every part of the process works together just right, and the entire line is running forward as if it’s following the rhythm of breathing.
- Horizontal and vertical photoelectric sensors
Can you imagine the label starting to shrink before the bottle even stands upright? The result would be either a crooked label or a wrinkled film. This type of alignment error often starts when the bottle is not positioned correctly.
Horizontal photoelectric responsible for looking left and right, vertical photoelectric tube up and down, forming a three-dimensional visual inspection system. They do not simply detect whether there are bottles or not, but whether the bottles are placed where they should be placed.
Even if the speed of the conveyor belt fluctuates a little, or the angle of the bottle has shifted a little, they can track in real time and automatically adjust the beat, so that the labels are pasted on without any error – smooth, accurate and without any error.
- Automatic waste material recycling system
What happens to the waste after the film edges have been trimmed? Pick it up? Wait for it to get stuck and then clean it up? –Then the production line will be a mess.
The automatic recycling system is the solution to this “seemingly unimportant, but super-accidental” part of the process. It takes the waste away as soon as the film is cut, so that it doesn’t stay in the cutter or on the conveyor belt and clog up the line.
The membrane is replaced cleanly, the line can run steadily, no need for human cleanup, no need for repeated shutdowns, and the overall rhythm follows smoothly.
- Non-stop label roll changeover system
Should you stop the machine to change the film when it runs out? If you have many SKUs in your production line and a large output per batch, how many times a day can you stop? This is one of the most annoying things in the field.
With the No-Stop Roll Changing System, this kind of downtime disappears. The previous roll has just been used up, the next roll is immediately in place, without any pause to complete the switch, and will not occur in the case of empty sets, running off.
It solves not only the problem of speed, but also the problem of “smoothness”. If the line does not stop, people do not panic, change the roll as if it had never happened, OEE is also naturally up.
Moisture & Air Handling
- Moisture removal systems
You may not care much, but your customers will feel it.
Just after steam shrinking, the bottle looks fine until you touch it – it’s slightly damp, a little cool, and some droplets of water are still stuck on the edge of the cap or the corner of the label.
It’s not “malfunction” level, but if you’re coding, packing in cartons, or have a matte or soft-touch film on the bottle, this vapor can ruin the whole texture.
The dehumidification system doesn’t rumble or get fancy. It dries the bottle quickly with a directional stream of air – not that cyclonic mess, but an even, steady, just-right dry.
You don’t need to go into it specifically. But customers can feel the “cleanliness” when they get the product.
What are the Types of Shrink Sleeve Machines

Different products, different production lines, the choice of sleeve labeling machine is different. Below are some common classifications, we generally recommend according to the customer’s packaging needs:
- Manual / Semi-Automatic Sleeve Labeling Machine
Suitable for factories with small production volume, or for trial production and small batch labeling. The operator manually puts the bottle, the machine automatically feeds the film, and after labeling, use the hot air gun or tunnel heat shrink. The speed is not fast, but the cost is low and the operation is flexible, especially suitable for start-up or craft type brands.
- Automatic Shrink Film Sleeve Labeling Machine
This one is the main production line. Automatic bottle, automatic labeling, automatically sent into the heat shrink tunnel, the whole process without human intervention. Suitable for medium and high speed production line, daily output of thousands or even tens of thousands of bottles are not a problem.
- High-speed rotary sleeve labeling machine
If the bottles you apply are shaped and curved, or the speed requirement is more than 300~600 bottles/minute, the rotary structure can make the bottles rotate synchronously when applying the film, ensuring that the film is applied more accurately without crookedness or wrinkles.
- Difference in Heat Shrink Methods: Steam VS Hot Air
Not every product is suitable for the same type of heat shrink. Steam heat shrink is suitable for bottles with complex shapes and higher fit; hot air system occupies a small area and is easy to maintain, suitable for workshops with limited space.
Some projects purchase separate labeling modules and heat shrink modules, while some customers choose an all-in-one solution that can be directly connected to the original production line.
Which type you really need still depends on your speed, bottle type and budget. But before you dive in, let’s also take a look at the optional modules — because they can make or break your workflow. Not sure which one to pick? We get that a lot, and we’re happy to help match a setup that actually works for your line.
What are the Optional Modules for Shrink Sleeve Machines?

Different product lines require different features. We offer a variety of optional modules that you can match according to bottle type, labeling accuracy or speed requirements:
- Optical Labeling System (Pattern Positioning)
If you have patterns, windows or special areas on the film that need to be accurately applied to the specified position on the bottle, this module can recognize the pattern and automatically align it, especially suitable for shaped bottles or labels with design.
- Automatic bottle positioner (bottle steering)
For irregular containers, like oval or flat bottles, this device will automatically adjust the direction of the bottle before applying the label to ensure that the film will not be crooked or jammed.
- Tear Line Punching Device (Convenient Opening)
It can add vertical or horizontal easy-tear lines on the label to make it convenient for consumers to open the label, which is commonly used in tamper-evident packages for food, health care products or pharmaceuticals. It’s a small touch, but your customer will notice — and that matters.
- Double-set Labeling Module (Bottle + Cap Simultaneous Lamination)
If your product needs to be laminated with two sections of film, such as a section for the bottle body and a section for the cap, this module can be completed in one go without multiple processes.
- Hot Air Module Upgrade
Depending on your heat shrinking method (steam or hot air), we can match a more suitable heating system to ensure that even complex bottle shapes can be shrunk evenly and fit beautifully.
- Conveyor Belt Extension
Need to reserve buffer between production lines? Or you want to connect the filling line or carton line? We offer conveyor belt extension and caching modules to avoid bottle stacking and downtime. We’ve seen people ignore this and end up regretting it during rush orders.
We don’t recommend a full set at once, but suggest you choose the most suitable function according to the product characteristics and production rhythm.
Quality Consumable Material

- 수축 필름
Shrink film isn’t just packaging — it’s what shapes the product on the shelf. The right film gives clean shrink, fewer defects, and keeps your line moving.
- 비닐
A budget option. Shrinks fast. Works with steam, hot air, and infrared. Good for simple bottles. Not great for the environment, but it’s fast and dependable.
- PET/PETG
Clear finish. Strong shrink, up to 80%. Handles curved bottles and detailed graphics well. Used a lot in premium packaging. Better eco score than PVC.
- OPS
Lightweight and stable. Easier to ship than PETG, steadier than PVC. Holds shape well on complex bottles. One of our yogurt clients runs OPS 12 hours a day — no jams, no downtime. Quietly reliable.
- 인민해방군
Made from plants. Shrinks well, around 75%. Compostable. Best on medium-speed lines with tight temp control. In summer, heat can be a problem. Still, if your brand pushes sustainability, PLA fits.
- POF
Not for sleeve labeling — more for shrink wrap. Great for outer packaging: books, toys, cosmetics. Shrinks clean at low temps, works with fast lines. If you need clean bundling, POF is a solid pick.
- Sleeves with Holographic Strip
Shrink sleeves can include built-in holographic strips. Good for anti-counterfeiting. You’ll see these on supplements and high-end drinks. It’s not just for show — we use multi-layer tech that’s hard to copy. Each batch is tested. If your product needs protection, this is a simple way to add visual trust and brand security.
- Shrink Ink
Standard ink cracks under heat. Shrink ink doesn’t. It stretches, keeps color sharp, and holds through the full 360° wrap. No fading, no smearing. Fully certified for safety and compliance.
- Cutting Blade
A dull blade ruins shrink film — uneven edges, extra waste, torn sleeves. Our blades stay sharp longer. Swaps are quick, no tools needed. A clean cut keeps the whole line steady.
- Protective Film
Some brands add a clear protective layer over the printed sleeve. Helps stop scratches or fading during transit. Easy to peel. Doesn’t mess with shrinking. If you want your product to still look fresh after shipping, this helps.
Which Industries is the Shrink Sleeve Machine Suitable for?

The Shrink sleeve is not only suitable for one type of product, it covers almost all packaging scenarios that require 360° labeling, visual appeal or tamper-evident closures:
- 음료 산업: fruit juices, milk drinks, energy drinks, tea drinks, etc., for PET, glass or aluminum bottles, with tight, moisture-resistant and durable labeling, even for shaped bottles.
- Cosmetics and personal care: shampoo, body wash, skin care products, hairspray and other products need a high quality appearance. Shrink Sleeve is just right to provide the whole bottle visual and moisture resistant packaging.
- Food & Condiments: Yogurt drinks, salad dressings, condiment bottles, hot sauces, etc. require a uniform packaging feel, and Shrink Sleeve maintains a consistent appearance between bottle types.
- Healthcare & Pharmaceuticals: For products with high tamper-proof requirements, Shrink Sleeve can realize an integrated cap + bottle wrapping, commonly used for healthcare products, syrups, and liquid medicines.
- Household cleaners: For disinfectants, cleaning sprays, laundry detergents, etc., Shrink Sleeve is not only suitable for shaped bottles, but is also chemically resistant and will not come off.
결론
A shrink sleeve machine does more than apply labels — it helps your product stand out.
It gives you full-surface branding, works with almost any container shape, and keeps production moving without interruption. What looks like a label is often what gives a product its shelf appeal.
From drinks to personal care to household and healthcare goods, shrink sleeves offer flexibility, speed, and a clean, finished look. They’re not just packaging — they shape how your brand is seen.
If you’re looking to upgrade how your product presents itself, Jochamp’s shrink sleeve systems are built to help you do exactly that.
자주 묻는 질문
What is the difference between a label and a shrink sleeve?
A regular label sticks to part of the bottle, while a shrink sleeve wraps around the whole thing. Shrink sleeves are printed on plastic film, slid over the product, then shrunk with heat to fit the shape perfectly. They give you full 360° design space and a much cleaner, high-end look.
What is the difference between a shrink sleeve and a stretch sleeve?
Shrink sleeves use heat to wrap tightly around the product, while stretch sleeves just rely on elasticity—no heat needed. Shrink sleeves fit complex shapes better and offer tamper-evident options, while stretch sleeves are quicker and simpler but only work for basic containers.
How do l know what size heat shrink to use?
It depends on your container’s size and the shrink rate of the film. The sleeve needs to be slightly bigger so it can shrink down to fit. Just send us your bottle details, and we’ll take care of the sizing for you.
